Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is an upcoming action-adventure video game developed by ArtPlay and DICO, and published by 505 Games. The game is led by former Castlevania series producer Koji Igarashi, and is considered a spiritual successor to the series. Bloodstained is expected to be released in 2018 for Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. The Vita version is being developed by Armature Studio. Inti Creates are developing a prequel minigame to be released alongside Bloodstained. Igarashi conceived the game after his departure from Konami, prompted by numerous fan requests for him to make another Metroidvania-type game, and used Kickstarter to demonstrate to potential funding agencies of the demand for the title during May and June 2015. The Kickstarter campaign, originally set for US$500,000, successfully raised more than $5.5 million from backers, making it the most funded video game crowdfunding campaign on the platform until it was surpassed by Shenmue III shortly after.
Bloodstained follows the protagonist Miriam, an orphan who is afflicted by an alchemist's curse, which is slowly turning her skin into crystal.To stop the curse, Miriam must explore a dangerous castle and locate its summoner, Gebel, who has suffered from the same curse for a long time. The game is expected to follow the Metroidvania-style gameplay of the post-Symphony of the Night and Order of Ecclesia games of the Castlevania series; by defeating enemies, Miriam will gain powers enabled by the crystals on her body, as well as items that can be used to craft new weapons and armor. The game will be presented in a 2.5D style, presenting the game in three-dimensional graphics but restricting movement to a 2D system. Igarashi stated the choice for 2.5D was that it follows in the style of his previous Castlevania games.

According to the director, the final product would have suffered if it was released to the public on the original launch date, saying, “It was either drop the quality bar one notch in order to get it out sooner, or it was to be satisfied with the quality and continue to make sure it was going to be maintained throughout the project. At the end of the day, I want to go with the quality. This is important to me.”
Bloodstained originally started as a collaboration between Igarashi’s company, Artplay, and developer Inti Creates, the company behind Azure Striker Gunvolt and the ill-fated Mighty No. 9, which released a few months ago to awful reviews. We asked Iga if some of his issues with Bloodstained’s quality falls on Inti Creates. Prior to the interview, Iga showed IGN a section from the opening area of his new game, and he references it in his answer.Iga acknowledged that once a new studio comes on board, Inti Creates role in making Bloodstained will be reduced because they aren’t making the procedural pieces of the game. We asked IGA why procedural generation using Unreal to create the backdrops of Bloodstained was so important to him. “Yeah, we’re trying to be modern, and if there's an official way to do something better than you should probably do it,” Iga explained. “Just thinking about the sheer size of what this game is, trying to go in and do everything by hand would obviously create - it would be beautiful, but it would create lots of delays and things like that.” “Finding the right balance between using some technology to help you but also still making sure you're also controlling the art side of it, that's sort of what we, through our studying and evaluations, come to realize. We need to do that to get to the goal.” Iga told IGN a new development partner hadn't been selected at the time of this interview. He and the team had limited the decision to a few options and were very close.

A group of alchemists, fearing its waning relevancy as science captures the 18th century setting, try to warn against the world losing faith. The alchemists then decide to summon demons to earth. Miriam, an orphan, is infused with magical crystals that attract these demons. However, Miriam falls into a comatose state, rendering her unable to be used as the sacrifice. However, using Gebel, the Alchemists are successful in summoning the demons. Having miraculously survided the ritual, Gebel decides to take revenge. Using his powers to summon demons, he destroys the Alchemist’s Guild. After 10 years, Miriam awakens, while at the same time a demonic castle emerges from the remains of the Alchemist Guild. Picked up as an orphan by an Alchemist at a young age, she became a host for the dark Alchemists’ curse. Although the magi-crystals were fused with her body at a young age, for 10 years she lay sleeping while the curse matured to its full form. It was during this period that the demons arrived, meaning that she missed their appearance and awoke with a mild form of amnesia, not quite fully understanding what happened to her.
She is a woman of few words but strong of purpose. Her youth is deceiving, making her seem confrontational and quick to judge, though in reality she is onstantly evaluating her next step. The pain she felt as an orphaned child fuels her compassionate desire to protect her loved ones and friends. The game will follow the "Igavania" model of game design, "A gothic, exploration-focused action platformer" , the setting being Gebel's castle which will house a variety of locations. Teleporters can be found around the castle that will allow the player to travel quickly in order to keep backtracking to a minium. The game has been stated to contain of RPG elements in the same vain as previous Igavanias. By defeating enemies and completing quests, Miriam will gain powers enabled by the crystals on her body. In addition, enemies in Bloodstained will drop which will play a role in the game's crafting system. IGA has said his current idea is that there will be five different kinds of drops, corresponding to different parts of an enemy, the heads, arms, and so on, and that even single monsters will have multiple drops. Of those drops, some of them will have magical abilities, and they sparkle to show their rarity. Normal crafting materials will be used on quests, or for weapons and armor, but the sparkling rares, if you level them, will become crystals. Those crystals will link with the magi-crystals on Miriam’s body and allow her to use special abilities/skills. Another idea IGA has mentioned is for the drops to give different stat subeffects: for example, an enemy head drop will raise magic power, or a drop from an enemy leg/foot will raise movement speed. By using the different drop materials and the different stat subeffects, the player will be able to customize Miriam to his or her liking.
